We have since fixed the problem and want to reassure you that because only the IMAP service was down, there was no mail loss (incoming and outgoing messages were flowing normally). Earlier today a severe Linux security bug dubbed GHOST has been published which allows anyone the ability to quickly gain complete control over a Linux server by doing something as simple as sending a special crafted email. It's a delicious little bug that will likely wreak havoc on all the systems out there with administrators who don't happen to see the news in time.
JTAN has put in place necessary security upgrades, and although Linux very rarely needs to be rebooted for any reason, both the nature of this vulnerability and the fact that the fix is in core code (glibc) used by a large number of other packages, we will be rebooting our systems shortly to ensure everything is fully protected.

Due to issues related to the fix for our outgoing mail problems from last week, we have found ourselves being unfairly blocked by an overzealous blacklist that won't give us the dignity of replying to our inquiries.
Sadly, this is par for the course with many RBL operators, especially (and quite ironically) those companies that have a history of poor email behavior and bad security decisions themselves.
Yes, I'm talking about you, Barracuda.
Fortunately, not many of you saw your messages being bounced, but for those that were affected by this, it was a huge headache.
Our upstream provider couldn't get anywhere on the problem either, so the only option was to get out of the apparently bad neighborhood we were in and add a new network interface to zeus. As Murphy usually has his way, during that process, a network technician lost the whole network service and had no choice but to reboot zeus.
We're sincerely sorry about this unplanned disruption, but the upside for those of you that were seeing email bounces is that this episode should be behind us once and for all. Fingers crossed.

It came to our attention very late Friday that some outgoing JTAN email was not getting to its destination. Because incoming email that is forwarded to other places comes in and out of JTAN's systems, such messages were also affected.
Upon investigation, this appears to have been a problem with our outbound mail filtering provider becoming a little too aggressive. Logs showed that this was an intermittent issue before last week, but starting last Tuesday, January 6, it started affecting large amounts of our outbound mail.
In the wee hours of Saturday morning, we re-routed our outbound message flow, so email should be back to normal, but it might be a good idea for JTAN customers to check with their friends, family and associates to make sure no important messages were missed between January 6 and 9.

Downtime - Scheduled and Unscheduled
Please be aware that there will be some downtime for zeus.jtan.com this coming Sunday, December 14. The data center where it is located is being upgraded (there may be an increase in bandwidth throughput afterward), which requires the machine be shut down for as long as four hours between 6am and 10am GMT.
Additionally, the JTAN administrative server has had some hiccups in the past few days which should only have affected anyone who was using the JTAN members area at the time the server was having difficulties. If you have any ongoing problems with the members area or otherwise, please do let us know so we can investigate.

No one likes paying monthly bills -- the fewer the better, especially if they are predictable and reliable. Now that the dust has settled after the changes earlier this year, JTAN is back to its predictable and reliable ways, so we're happy to announce that you can once again pay your bill on an annual basis.
The most fool-proof way for existing members to pay annually is to simply calculate your anticipated JTAN costs and make a payment for that amount (you can do this for any period of time you like -- 3 months, 6 months, or even 10 years, although we can't make promises about what things will look like in 10 years :-) This is treated as an account credit from which monthly charges are then deducted.
If you'd like to make it official, you can log in and change the billing term from monthly to annual on most paid features, however your primary ProWeb account will need to be changed manually, so open a new support request or get in touch and we'll be happy to make the change.

In keeping with its tradition of providing the best tools in personal privacy, JTAN is now making Tor available via both shell and VPN. You can also register your own Tor hidden service, allowing you to make your web content available in an anonymous manner.
Tor is a powerful tool on the side of the little guy, and as well as helping make it available to our users, we're also proud to be able to support Tor by contributing bandwidth to its network and are evaluating the possibility of running an exit node. If you have opinions on such matters, get in touch!
If you want to tunnel an application (could be something other than your web browser - we make no assumptions about or limitations on our users) to one of our Tor proxies, you can find instructions and notes on our proxy and tunneling page. Also, tips on setting up the tunnel itself can be found on our tunnel setup and port forwarding page.

People are Actually Paying for JTAN Service
After the worries of restructuring JTAN, re-engineering many services,
re-hosting our sites, copying files, databases, and passwords, my last
worry was if anyone would want to pay anything for what JTAN still offers.
Our new price list is simplified and generally lower than the
old prices. The new server, zeus, is better, faster, and more
up-to-date than any of our old servers. Nevertheless, I didn't know if
any 2013 JTAN customers would be willing to suffer through the changes
and still pay for service in 2014.
Well, it appears that some of you are still willing to send ten, fifteen, or even twenty bucks to pay for a month of one of the last remaining private, advertising free, and full-access web hosts still existing on the Internet. Thank you. Thank you for your business and your confidence.
Why do I run JTAN? Certainly not to make money. Although at one time JTAN had a 6-figure annual revenue, nowadays the profit from JTAN barely pays my family's cell phone bill. I'm uncompensated for my time, yet I continue to run JTAN because I have a sense of responsibility to all of you that trust us to maintain your web sites and other Internet presence services. Reliability is key. I don't feel that I can just "flip the OFF switch" and walk away. I appreciate the confident few willing to still pay us, and so long as this meager income exceeds expenses, I will continue to run JTAN -- if only so that the few remaining JTAN customers can seek cheap marketing-supported hosting at their leisure.
Then again, as Yogi said, predictions are difficult, especially about the future. It could be possible that JTAN rises like a Phoenix from its ashes and returns to equal then surpass its former glory. It could happen. I very much appreciate the business of those of you willing to pay for a ticket to witness this drama first hand.

FTP Settings
FTP access to home directories requires secure FTP. You can use either
SSH based FTP, or traditional FTP with TLS security. Here's the config

Extra FTP accounts now available
All JTAN ProWeb accounts already provide read/write Secure FTP access to all
files in your shell account using the same username and password as
can be used for SSH. This is fine for most users, but sometimes it's
convenient to have different FTP logins with a different password
that are "jailed" into
some sub-folder of your overall space. For example, maybe
you want to give access to your web site to a web developer, but
you don't want to share access to the whole site.
Extra FTP accounts that can serve this purpose are now available. They can have a unique username and password that are different than your members or shell credentials. Access through these extra FTP accounts is "jailed" into a subfolder that you specify. These accounts can be added simply by clicking the blue "plus" icon next to "FTP Account" in the members page. There is no extra charge.
Some technical points to keep in mind: All FTP access (either the main account or the extra accounts) requires secure FTP with explicit TLS. Plain, old fashioned FTP will not work. Also, for most users on home DSL, FIOS, or CATV routers or firewalls, passive mode FTP will be required.
The main FTP login has your main username and always has full read/write access to your files. In contrast, any extra FTP logins have a different username and can only access you files by virtue of group permission. Thus, if you want extra FTP accounts to have write access to existing files, be sure the group write permission is granted. Conversely, if you don't want the extra FTP account to have write access to a file, simply revoke the group permission. This gives you total control over security of your files.

Facebook command line now on zeus
If you know what you are doing on Facebook, you can consider a much
lightweight alternative Facebook client called fbcmd, a
command-line client for Facebook, instead of
heavy-weight Facebook web access. Using fbcmd's command line
interface (CLI), you can do pretty much everything you would do on
Facebook, but without having to download superfluous dynamic
content. You can also use fbcmd in scripts, cron, or at
jobs to do things on facebook automagically.
Configure fbcmd on Linux
One-time initial configuration for fbcmd proceeds in three steps.
Step 1: Grant fbcmd basic access to your Facebook account. For that, simply run fbcmd command.
This will print a Facebook URL. Copy and paste this URL on a web browser window.
After logging in to your Facebook account, facebook will ask to permit "Command Line" access to your Facebook account. Click on "Okay" to finalize basic access authorization. Please don't be irrationally afraid of doing this -- you are granting permission to yourself.
Step 2: Get authorization code. You need to get an authorization code from Facebook to be able to access your Facebook account offline.
For this, go to http://www.facebook.com/code_gen.php?v=1.0&api_key=42463270450 on your web browser, and generate one-time AUTH code to use.
The AUTH code is time-sensitive, and can expire if not used right away. If the code expires, you can re-generate it.
Once an AUTH code is generated, run the following command, where "XXXXXX" is your AUTH code. You will see "AUTH code accepted".
Step 3: Grant additional permission to access and manage your Facebook account.
For this, go to this Facebook URL on your web browser, which will ask you to grant access permissions on various properties. Continue to click "Okay" button until you are done. Don't worry. This step will not allow any other user to access your Facebook account. All the granted permissions are linked to your Facebook account and Shell account only. YOU ARE GRANTING PERMISSION TO YOURSELF
This is the end of fbcmd configuration.

Twitter client "twidge" installed on zeus
The twidge
client for interacting with microblogging sites such as
Twitter and StatusNet has been installed on zeus.
Twidge is a full featured command-line client. It is designed to be useful when sitting at a shell prompt, or in scripts run from cron or at. It produces output in well-formed and easily-parsed ways, and has various features for working with piped data.
Twidge can be used to:
- Manually tweeting and following your friends
- Tweeting automatically in the future based on cron or at jobs
- Tweeting two/from email with procmail scripts
- Filtering tweets with scripts and rules
Get started by typing "twidge setup" at the command prompt. For more details, refer to the man page, or the wiki HOWTO.

It appears that the JTAN website www.jtan.com experienced some sort of
"issue" at about 16:30 UTC. We are investigating. There seems to be
some filesystem lossage. This is JTAN website specific. Customer
websites or shell accounts on zeus should not be directly affected.

New Pricing Plans -- First Look
Although the full details haven't been worked out, the overall pricing
plan for the "New JTAN" has now been established. Here are the
high points.
- Everyone now has the same account: ProWeb. There is no longer a ProShell account or any old Webtrafix or LineX legacy accounts.
- The basic, no-frills ProWeb account is $10/mo. This includes a shell account on zeus and full access to unlimited DNS and Mail features, including aliasing, and privacy features including VPN and DynDNS.
- MySQL Databases are $5/mo extra
- Domain based web sites are $3/mo extra, and include unlimited subdomains and aliases
- Disk storage is $5/mo per full Gigabyte. Partial Gigs are free.
- Domain registration is maintained for $2/mo. New registrations require a 6-month commitment.
- Everything is billed monthly. Prepay is accepted, but there is no discount for advance payment.

Mailman Web Interface Restored
The mailman administrator web interface is back online at mailman.jtan.com.
List administrators, please, you should take this opportunity to retrieve your list rosters and find the a way to proceed that best meets the needs of your list members. It's unlikely that JTAN will be fully restoring email-based list operation.
Once you are logged in as list admin, list rosters should be available at the URL
http://mailman.jtan.com/mailman/roster/yourlistname
If the email addresses are obscured with an "at" rather than a "@", this can be fixed by turning off this option under Privacy settings.
I apologize for tossing Mailman overboard during this email transition, but business is business and some hard decisions needed to be made in the restructuring of JTAN.

Heartbleed Bug -- Yawn!
Unlike some companies, JTAN does not require our customers trust us
with personal information. Consequently, unlike your favorite department
store, software
company, or entertainment
company, JTAN believes that our customers' personal information is
safest kept with our customers, not on our servers.
Heartbleed reminds us that computers are easily compromised and the best way to keep private data private is to keep it private! I mean, even a five year old can break into a computer.
In any case, we believe that JTAN's computers have been properly patched in defense against Heartbleed (unlike all those embedded CPUs in DSL and Cable boxes, appliances, and nuclear power plants). Real Soon Now we'll be re-issuing various JTAN signed certs and keys. We ask that everyone should stay calm, put it all in perspective, and soldier on.

Disk Use Statistics Operational -- Usage Fees
Disk usage measures given in the members page under the "Usage
and Stats" section are now correct and updated automatically.
That's the good news.
The uncomfortable news is that JTAN will begin charging for disk space usage in May. The pricing will be $5/GByte per month. The exact details of pricing are still being worked out, how much "free" use before the charges cut in, averaging algorithm, etc... Nevertheless, please be aware of this upcoming policy change. If you have 10 Gigs stored on zeus and would be upset about a $50 monthly fee for this storage, then you should reduce your storage accordingly.

Mailman Mailing Lists
For various technical reasons it turned out to be infeasible
to maintain Mailman through the JTAN mail transition. Originally
I was under the impression that this meant a permanent shutdown
of Mailman -- and it still may -- but I recently spoke with
our new upstream spam scanning service and they agreed to possibly
handle some low-volume outgoing lists. Maybe. If some details
can be worked out.
In response to this positive news, we will attempt to restore some Mailman lists. contact us if you really, really want your list restored. Be aware that I can make no promises. Supporting lists requires significant resources and there's very little reward. List admin's are among the pickiest of email users. And list lusers are amongst the most clueless of email users -- often reporting list messages as spam, getting list-servers onto blacklists.
But we'll do what we can.

The Members Area is back online and mostly functional. We are in the
process of repairing or removing the broken stuff. Our goal is to make
the Members Area fully functional again, including disk and web
traffic stats. Stay tuned.
One important part of the Members Area that necessarily will change considerably is the Spam filtering section, a consequence of our new upstream spam filtering provider.

End of an Era
All JTAN computers formerly hosted in Conshohocken, PA, are now
shut down and removed from that data center. JTAN was physically
in that data center for almost a decade, and we have had connections
to the 207.106.0.0/16 world for more than 10 years. The data center is
dead; long live the data center. Everything that was JTAN (well,
almost everything) has been re-hosted in a data center near Chicago.
Two things that didn't make the transition -- two things we hope to restore Real Soon Now -- are the Members Area and Mailman mailing lists. These will Soon return in some form or another.
Please contact us if you just saw some feature or service vanish that we didn't expect to vanish.

Outgoing SMTP Migration
Last but not least in our server migration is the SMTP outgoing relay.
Once again, we hope to make this change transparent. If you use the host "smtp.jtan.com" for outgoing mail, we should be able to re-route your outgoing mail through the new server without you needing to make config changes.
In most cases....
If your outgoing mail stops working in the next day or so, you should check that you have LOGIN authentication selected in your outgoing server configuration, and that the port associated with smtp.jtan.com is 587. Although it's good to keep STARTTLS security turned on, this can sometimes cause problems. There may be a prompt to accept our server certificate. Please accept it if you want to send mail. If you are prompted for a password and username, you should use the mailbox-id and password for one of your POP mailboxes at JTAN.
If the above suggestions don't help, please consider using your ISP's outgoing relay as a temporary workaround. Most ISPs offer outgoing mail service. You can send outgoing mail through anybody -- just like you can mail a letter from any mailbox.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. The SMTP outgoing relay is the last major migration task. From here on, things and JTAN should settle down considerably.

Mail Archiving on Webmail
As has been announced, the old mail server will be shut
down
Real Soon Now. Everyone should have downloaded any
old mail they want to have preserved. JTAN will not
transfer or archive old mail.
Several users that exclusively use JTAN Webmail to access their mail folders have asked for advice on how to download their old mail messages. There are many options, including Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, Fetchmail, etc... Any of these can be used with IMAP folders. One could also use Gmail to fetch the INBOX with POP. Although Gmail doesn't work with IMAP folders, there are third party apps that can transfer IMAP folders to Gmail.
Another option is to use the direct to zip-file archiving plugin in Squirrelmail. Log into the Old Webmail system. Under Options, there are Archive Settings, for choosing the style of archiving as Mbox, EML, or Maildir format. Depending on your PC software, you'll want differnt options.

I believe that all user shell account data, and websites,
have been moved to the new server. This includes Jupiter. The
Gallilaen moons Io, Callisto, Europa and Ganymede. And also Thebe.
The old machines will be shut down effective immediately.

Webmail Old and New
Incoming mail has now been migrated to the new servers. This has
caused some JTAN users alarm and consternation when it seems all their
old mail folders have vanished. Yes, we announced
that old email would not be copied, and we encouraged everyone to
backup their old mail. Nevertheless there still are some stragglers.
No worries. As previously explained the old servers are still accessible via POP and IMAP under -old names. In addition, temporarily, we will maintain Old Webmail and New Webmail. These access the old and new mail servers respectively.
I hope this helps. I know the email transition has been difficult and inconvenient for some of you. Please enjoy the FREE SERVICE while we make these changes.

POP/IMAP Switchover Completed
The names pop.jtan.com and imap.jtan.com now point at the new
POP and IMAP servers. Your password has been transferred, so
most mail clients should log in to the new servers without trouble.
You may see some SSL errors. Please ignore these errors and re-try a little later. Resist the temptation to change your configuration. Changing your settings will just compound the problem. SSL is suggested but not required. SSL works fine, but it can be tricky to get working. In general, turning SSL off makes it easier to get mail to work -- but your mail is less secure. Again, please leave your SSL setting as it was, if possible.
Should you be totally unable to login and check mail, please contact us. Obviously, don't use your broken email address as a return address or you may not be able to receive our suggestions.
If, for some reason you didn't download your INBOX and other folders from the old server and all your valuable saved mail appears to have vanished. You have one last chance to get it back. The names pop-old.jtan.com and imap-old.jtan.com point at the old mail servers. You can change your _Incoming_ mail server setting to point at one of these to see your old mail again. Please download that old mail ASAP because the old mail servers will disappear completely 1 April, no foolin'.

First Part of Mail Transition Complete
All mail is now being delivered to the new server.
POP and IMAP are still checking the old servers. Please try to drain your INBOX from the old server. In about 12 hours I will switch over and POP/IMAP will be checking the new servers and you should see fresh mail again.

We saw some issues with bouncing mail after our first attempt
to switch over the mail system. We've temporarily reversed the
switchover to investigate what happened. Everything should
be as it was. Very little mail was delivered to the new system.

Mail System Switchover
We are begining the mail system switchover today. If all goes
well, most users need take no additional action.
The first step is to direct all mail to the new POP/IMAP machine. After this happens, new mail will go to the new machine. Old mail will remain on the old machine. We will keep pop.jtan.com and imap.jtan.com pointing at pop-old and imap-old for a while to allow everyone to drain the last mail from their inboxes.
In this temporary situation, when mail is going to the new machine but users are still checking the old machine it may seem like mail is lost, but this should not be the case.
Then we will switch over entirely to the new machine. You should then see only new mail. Old mail will still be available on pop-old and imap-old for some short time in case anything was missed.

Ganymede Migration Complete
All files from ganymede that will be copied to zeus now have
been copied. You will find them in the ~/ganymede directory.
All websites formerly on Ganymede are now on zeus. They are being served from ~/ganymede/public_html. Docroot configuration and JTAN hosted DNS have been updated.
The copying of callisto is still in progress.

Copying from Ganymede and Callisto Almost Complete
There were many files, but the copying home directories from ganymede
and callisto to zeus is almost complete. You
should see your files appear on zeus before the
end of the week.
Web site configuration and DNS pointers will be automatically switched once the files are fully in place.
Some people are making their own copies to zeus. This will result in duplicate copies and some significant slowdown in copying. There will be ample time after the copy for you to check that we got everything. Please leave the copying to us.

Mail MX Switchover and New Improved Spam Filter
We are hoping to accomplish our main
email switchover next Thursday, 20 March.
As part of the mail transition, JTAN will be adding a new, improved spam and virus filter. The new filter will be much, much better than what we run now. Best of all, the new filter will allow JTAN to drop the long-despised reverse DNS check on incoming mail. Yes. You read that right. Your correspondents running old MS Exchange servers on their consumer cable modems or DSL lines will once again be able to send mail directly to JTAN.
The filter will come into effect when we change the MX servers for all email domains served by JTAN. This MX switch will happen automatically for everyone that uses JTAN for DNS. If you have configured MX pointers someplace other than JTAN, you'll need to switch your MX to match our new ones.
